Our Work

Some of our ongoing efforts towards making The Chemical Sciences Departments across Ireland places where equality, diversity and inclusion are at the forefront to everything we do.

Gender Equality Enhancement Fund (GEEF) Success

The School of Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin led a successful application to the Gender Equality Enhancement Fund (GEEF) to support the foundation of the first All-Ireland Network for Gender Equality in Chemistry. This initiative seeks to build a supportive network of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and accelerate the EDI work of individual departments across Ireland.

RISE Programme

Funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry

We are aware that racism, discrimination and ethnic inequalities exist in the Chemical Sciences, just as they exist in wider society. A recent report from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), called the Missing Elements report, shows that we are failing to retain chemists from minority ethnicities, meaning they are underrepresented at senior levels in chemistry. The RISE programme funded by the RSC targets students from minority ethnic backgrounds, who are following a Chemistry BSc programme. The aim of this programme is to offer structured mentoring and practical experience to Retain, Inspire, Support and Enhance (RISE) undergraduate students from ethnically under-represented groups in the Chemical Sciences. The first cohort of students were hosted in research groups over the summer of 2024, to undertake a 4-week paid research placement.

Athena Swan Silver Award

The School of Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin is the first Chemistry Department in the Republic of Ireland to be awarded Athena SWAN Silver accreditation (August 2023). This is a great achievement but also a promise that to implement actions to promote and support a culture of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for our staff and students. The Athena Swan Ireland Awards Ceremony took place on 8th November 2023 at University College Cork. Larisa Florea (chair of the EDI committee, School of Chemistry, TCD) received the AS Silver award on behalf of the School.
